Can you afford not to backup?

We were recently contacted by a new client who’d arrived at work that morning to a workstation that wouldn’t turn on. Being a barrister, the client was very concerned about the important documents on his computer which were not backed up.

Despite exhaustive efforts to retrieve the data, we were unable to recover anything from the hard drive. The only way to recover the documents was to send the drive to a data recovery specialist. Anyone who has been down this road will know how financially painful it is. Luckily, the data recovery specialists were able to recover all of the important documents. The total cost? Almost $2,000.

So what’s the moral of the story here? Backup your data regularly!

We cannot emphasise enough the importance of a regular backup. All too often we see this scenario play out, and often the outcome is far worse. But if you’re anything like most people, connecting a USB hard drive and manually backing up your data is something of an inconvenience that you’d much rather leave to someone else. If only we knew a guy who did that for an affordable fee. We’re pretty sure he’ll never exist, but say hello to the next best thing – Cloud Backup.

As part of the comprehensive IT Support services we provide to our clients in Melbourne, we always advise that individuals and micro-businesses adopt a cloud backup solution. Cloud backup providers are in abundance now, but knowing which one to choose can be a difficult decision. After all, you’re trusting them with your precious data.

5 considerations when choosing cloud backup

  1. Reputation – How long have they existed? Will they be around in 2 years, 5 years, 10 years?
  2. Reliability – Will the data be available when I need it?
  3. Security – Is the data encrypted? Who keeps the encryption key?
  4. Price – It should be affordable
  5. Usability – It’s got to be easy to use

So who do you choose? If you’ve got time to evaluate the myriad of choices, then we encourage you to do your own research. If you’re happy to take our word for it, we think Crashplan ticks all the boxes. Their client list includes big names such as Google, NASA, Adobe, Cisco, Groupon, National Geographic, Bank of America, Harvard University, the list goes on.

The sleek, simple to use interface and intuitive setup wizard get you up and running in a matter of minutes. Simple and affordable pricing and more options than you’ll ever need. Crashplan will even recover a file that you accidentally deleted. The best bit – it’s all automatic! Combine all of this and we think you’ve got the best consumer end cloud backup on the market today.
